Statistics state that 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size!
As we age our breasts start to head south! Unfortunately due to gravity!
It is important to keep them lifted and separated with a proper fitting bra. The nipple should sit halfway between our shoulder and elbow.
One of the most common signs of a poor fitting bra is the back riding up. This means it is too large of a band size which is the most common error women make when buying a new bra. The band should sit parallel to the floor and not up between the shoulder blades. It should be snug, but not too tight to be uncomfortable. You should be able to fit a few fingers in under the band easily. If you raise your arms, the bra should stay put and not move around. A new bra should fit in the loosest hook at the back as bras will stretch and never shrink.
The next common problem is the cup puckering or cutting into the breast. If the cup is too small, it will cut into the breast creating a “double boob effect”. There should be no spillage at the top, bottom or sides of the cup. If the cup is too big, it will pucker at the top or all over. The wire needs to sit flat against the center breast bone and needs to sit outside the breast tissue under the arm.
Another issue is the shoulder straps slipping off or digging in. If the straps are sliding off, then the band might be too large or it might be the wrong style for you. If the straps are digging in, there is too much pressure on the shoulders and neck. The back band is not providing enough support. The band needs to fit snugly so it can provide 80-90% of the support for the breasts and then the straps(shoulders) only carry 10-20% of the load. Do not rely on the straps to lift up the breasts! This will only cause neck and shoulder pain as well as upper back tension and poor posture.
A properly fitted bra will make your clothing look and fit better. Your waistline will become elongated and appear smaller. It will also relieve strain from your neck, shoulders and back and improve your posture.
Every year you should be refitted for a new bra as our bodies are constantly changing due to hormones, exercise, weight loss or gain. We will usually wear 6 different bra sizes during our lifetime.
